Hannah Dreier Wins 2024 Michael Kelly Award

Finalists are from the Detroit Free Press, the Each day Beast, and The Washington Put up.

Hannah Dreier is the winner of the twenty first annual Michael Kelly Award for her sequence “Alone and Exploited,” revealed by The New York Instances in 2023. Dreier’s sweeping and groundbreaking investigation into migrant little one labor in the US introduced a “new economic system of exploitation” to nationwide consideration.

Of their commendation, the judges describe Dreier’s reporting as tenacious and impactful, and be aware her “sheer doggedness in uncovering this scandal.” Dreier is a Pulitzer Prize–successful investigative reporter for the Instances, in addition to a two-time Michael Kelly Award finalist. She might be awarded a prize of $25,000.

Given yearly by The Atlantic, the Michael Kelly Award honors journalists whose work exemplifies “the fearless pursuit and expression of reality,” qualities that outlined Michael Kelly’s personal life and profession. Kelly was the primary journalist killed whereas protecting the Iraq Warfare, in 2003. He served as editor of The Atlantic and Nationwide Journal when each magazines have been publications of Atlantic Media, chaired by David G. Bradley. Bradley created the award in Kelly’s honor.

Journalists from three different information organizations have been acknowledged as finalists, and every will obtain a $3,000 award: Georgea Kovanis and Mandi Wright, on the Detroit Free Press, for his or her intimate portrait of a heroin and fentanyl addict amid the opioid disaster; Philip Obaji Jr., on the Each day Beast, for his reporting on the Wagner Group’s shady operations within the Central African Republic; and a workforce of greater than 75 journalists at The Washington Put up, for his or her deep dive into the rise of the AR-15.

5 judges chosen the winner and the finalists: Jenisha Watts, a senior editor at The Atlantic; Toby Lester, a senior editor at Harvard Enterprise Assessment; James Warren, the chief editor of NewsGuard; Ena Alvarado, a author and former assistant editor at The Atlantic; and Cullen Murphy, the editor at giant of The Atlantic.
