LEGAZPI CITY, ALBAY, Philippines — A magnitude 5 earthquake hits Monreal city in Masbate province Tuesday evening (Aug. 27), in line with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) including that aftershocks could happen.
In a bulletin, Phivolcs mentioned the middle of the quake, which was recorded at 9:01 p.m. and was tectonic in origin, was positioned 9 kilometers southwest of Monreal, a city within the Masbate’s Ticao Island.

The depth of the quake was at 25 kilometers, Phivolcs mentioned.
It was felt at Depth V in Masbate Metropolis in mainland Masbate; Depth IV in Monreal, San Fernando, and Batuan, all in Ticao Island; Depth III in Uson, Mobo, Dimasalang, and Milagros within the mainland province and a few components of Samar and Northern Samar; and Depth II within the Masbate cities of Baleno, Cataingan, Aroroy, Palanas, Mandaon, and Claveria.
Phivolcs’ newest bulletin confirmed that intensities had been raised within the following areas:
- Depth V: Masbate Metropolis, Masbate
- Depth IV: Monreal, Batuan, and San Fernando in Masbate
- Depth III: Uson, Mobo, Dimasalang, and Milagros in Masbate; Tagapul-an and Almagro in Samar; and San Vicente, Northern Samar
- Depth II: Baleno, Cataingan, Aroroy, Palanas, Mandaon, and Claveri in Masbate; Alen, Victoria, San Isidro, and Lavezares in Northern Samar
- Depth I: Lope de Vega, Northern Samar
In the meantime, Phivolcs’ scale recorded the earthquake on the following instrumental intensities:
- Depth V: Metropolis of Masbate, Masbate
- Depth IV: Uson, Masbate
- Depth III: Batuan, and Milagros in Masbate; Javier, Leyte
- Depth II: Aroroy and Cataingan in Masbate; Kawayan, Biliran; Metropolis of Carcar in Cebu; and Irosin in Sorsogon
- Depth I: Claveria, Masbate; Metropolis of Legazpi, Albay; Metropolis of Roxas, Capiz; Metropolis of Catbalogan and Gandara in Samar; Kananga and Leyte in Leyte; Metropolis of Cebu; Culaba, Biliran; and Bulusan, Sorsogon —with a report from Dianne Raine U. Sampang
