Former India fielding coach R Sridhar joins Afghanistan as assistant to Jonathan Trott

Sridhar has labored for the Indian cricket workforce, the Nationwide Cricket Academy, and the Punjab Kings as a fielding and spin bowling coach.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has named Ramakrishnan Sridhar, commonly known as R Sridhar, as their new assistant coach. The 54-year-old served as India’s men’s cricket team fielding coach from 2014 to 2021 and was part of over 300 matches and four World Cups during the period. R Sridhar has tried his hand in franchise cricket as well and served as Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings) spin bowling coach from 2014 to 2017 in the IPL.

Sridhar, a seasoned coach who has 23 years of experience, will be head coach Jonathan Trott’s deputy for Afghanistan’s two upcoming series. He’ll start with the one-off Test match against New Zealand in Noida on September 9, which will be followed by 3 ODIs against South Africa in Sharjah from September 18 to 22.

“It is worth mentioning that the Afghanistan Cricket Board has appointed Sridhar as the assistant coach for the one-off Test against New Zealand and the 3-match ODI series against South Africa. The Afghanistan Cricket Board wishes Sridhar fills the role effectively and hope to have long term contract with him in the future,” the ACB said in the release, indicating that Sridhar’s appointment could be temporary.
