WTC points table: India to remain at 3rd

After a rain-curtailed Day 1 of the Gabba Test, Australia came back strongly on Day 2, finishing at 405-7. Steve Smith and Travis Head hammered continued blows to India throughout the day, stitching up a 200+ partnership to send Rohit’s men on the backfoot. This series is crucial for both teams as they aim to secure a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. South Africa currently leads the WTC standings and looks likely to qualify with two home Tests against Pakistan remaining. Australia is second with 60.71 percentage points, while India is third with 57.29 percentage points.

How can India qualify for WTC Final?

For India to qualify directly, they must win the series by a 4-1 or 3-1 margin. If India lose the Gabba Test but win the remaining two matches, they will need external help, such as a drawn Test between Australia and Sri Lanka from their 2-game Test series in the subcontinent.

A 2-2 series draw at BGT would complicate matters for India. They would require Sri Lanka to win their series against Australia. If Australia wins the series 3-2, India would need South Africa to lose both Tests against Pakistan and hope for one drawn game between Sri Lanka and Australia.

Latest on BGT

A 4-1 or 3-1 series win for Australia would end India’s WTC final hopes altogether. In that case, South Africa and Australia would compete for the ultimate Test title at the Lord’s Cricket Ground, starting on June 7, 2025.

Direct WTC Final qualification for India

  • India must win the series against Australia by either a 4-1 or 3-1 margin to qualify directly for the WTC final without relying on other results.

If India Loses the Gabba Test:

  • Winning the remaining two Tests would leave India needing one drawn match between Australia and Sri Lanka in their series.
  • This would push India’s percentage points to 58.8%, keeping Australia below 57%.

Series Draw at 2-2:

  • India would require Sri Lanka to win their home series against Australia to stay in contention.

If Australia Win 3-2:

  • India would need:
    • South Africa to lose both Tests against Pakistan.
    • At least one drawn match between Australia and Sri Lanka.

If Australia Win 4-1 or 3-1:

  • India’s chances of qualifying for the WTC final would end.
  • The final would then feature South Africa vs. Australia.
